Fertility Over 35: Debunking the Myths

When it comes to fertility advice, there are lots of conflicting stories doing the rounds. Though 35 is widely considered the age at which women become less likely to conceive, everyone is different – plus, worrying will only put additional stress on a woman’s body, making her less able to relax and let nature take its course. Here, Bart Kuczera from Beacon CARE Fertility shares some facts and advice around conceiving in your late thirties.

The Six-Month Mark

“Though the chances for successful conception begin to drop at 35,” Bart begins, “this should only count for the first year of trying. Most women at this age are still quite fertile, and should conceive within the first six months (and a few more in the latter half of the year).” However, it’s important to consider fertility testing if you do reach the six-month mark without conceiving; better to have as much information as possible before proceeding with options like IVF. “It’s harder for a woman to produce healthy eggs as time goes by”, Bart notes. “As a result, conception can take longer. The risk of primary infertility is already one in seven, and will double over the next five years. That’s why it’s advisable to seek medical advice after six months of unsuccessful attempts to conceive.”

Potential Issues

There are some other potential issues that couples should be cognisant of as they try to get pregnant, though of course, not all of these apply to everyone. “In parallel to ovarian ageing”, says Bart, “other chronic conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and autoimmune issues have a better chance of developing into a full-size disease. They may interfere with fertility, damaging ovarian tissue, block or damage uterine tubes, cause uterine cavity distortion or chronic inflammation.”

Resources

Despite these potential concerns, lots of women successfully conceive well into their thirties. It can certainly be a stressful time, but there are lots of resources available. Practises like yoga and meditation can help women (and men) relax, while fertility counselling allows couples to discuss their apprehension and worry in safe environment. The team at Beacon are also on hand to help. “We can arrange appropriate patient pathways to address and overcome these types of issues”, says Bart. “We’ve had many successful treatments with high pregnancy rates as a result of our experienced, compassionate team using the latest technology and techniques available.”
