All You Need to Know About Digital Doctor

Here at Irish Life Health, we understand that life is busy. As you juggle family and work commitments, it can be tough to find time if something unexpected crops up. That’s why we offer our Digital Doctor on all plans. This handy service puts you in touch with a fully qualified GP via web or phone, meaning you don’t need to take time out of your day to visit a surgery. Here’s how it works…

What’s Digital Doctor?

This convenient option offers Irish Life Health members unlimited consultations with a GP registered with the Medical Council of Ireland. You can phone 24/7 to make an appointment to speak to a professional, or – if your symptoms or questions are straightforward – send the doctor a short message. You can also arrange a virtual face-to-face consultation during selected hours, if you prefer.

How to Access the Service

All you need to access Digital Doctor is either a regular phone if you’re calling (01 562 5150), or computer / smartphone equipped with a dual camera and internet connection if you’d like further interaction. Smartphone users will need to download the app here (see instructional vid below). As you browse the service, you’ll see a number of useful options, including Call GP, Online Services, and ‘Health Wise’, a comprehensive database of lifestyle, disease and travel information.

What You Can Ask About

You can ask the Digital Doctor pretty much anything you’d normally ask your own GP. They’ll be able to talk you through all manner of topics, from age-related health issues and vaccinations if you’re heading abroad, to any common allergies you may be experiencing. The most frequent ailments Irish Life Health customers contacted the Digital Doctor about last year were ear, nose and throat, dermatology and urinary tract infections, but they also had queries around orthopaedic, gastroenterology and respiratory issues. If, however, you have symptoms that require a physical examination, the Digital Doctor will recommend you see your own GP.

Prescriptions & Referrals

The Digital Doctor can issue you a prescription, by faxing it to your local pharmacy. However, in line with clinical best practise guidelines, they’re unable to issue repeat prescriptions for ongoing treatment of long-term conditions. They can refer you to a consultant though, giving you the choice of where you’d like to access care.

Confidentiality

Client confidentiality is of utmost importance. All GPs registered in Ireland have an obligation of doctor-patient confidentiality, and this applies to the Digital Doctor service too.
