Have you ever considered getting a vasectomy?

You’re not alone, nearly one third (28%) [i] of Irish men have considered the procedure.

Doctor Philip Kiernan answers the most common questions below:

It can feel uncomfortable, but most men are back to normal within 24-48 hours of getting the procedure.

Yes, and it’s going to feel just like it did before the procedure.

Sperm only makes up <1% of ejaculate, so there won't be any noticeable difference in the quantity or appearance of ejaculate after.

No and no. The procedure does not affect sex drive or cause impotence.

In fact, following a vasectomy procedure most men report an increase in their sex drive, as they no longer need to worry about an unintended pregnancy.

After the vasectomy, there will be some sperm left in the upper part of the vas deferens tubes. Following the procedure men are advised to use condoms for at least 3 months, until the semen is declared sperm free. Semen samples are taken and analysed 24 weeks after the procedure to ensure no further sperm is left in the vas deferens tubes.

Yes. Following a successful vasectomy there’s a 1 in 3000 [ii] chance of a pregnancy, making them the most effective form of contraception currently available.

In theory but the success rates are very low so it should be considered permanent if you are considering it. It’s recommended that men consider all contraceptive methods available and that they are sure this is the most suitable long-term family planning method for them.
